Rowland wraps up the win with late overtake during intense event

Nissan Formula E Team took victory with Oliver Rowland during a dramatic Tokyo E-Prix today. Following a second place finish yesterday, the Brit started on pole position for the third consecutive race and made use of his Attack Mode late on. He brilliantly battled to the front with a daring final overtake, scoring the fourth win of Season 11 for the Japanese outfit. Meanwhile, Norman Nato lined up in eighth after making the duels, and despite showing promising early pace suffered contact in the second half of the event finishing 17th.

The result sees Rowland extend his lead in the Drivers’ Standings to 77 points, while Nissan Formula E Team consolidates its spot at the top of the Teams’ Championship. On the constructors’ side, Nissan remains firmly in first in the Manufacturers’ Standings after nine rounds of action.

Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal, Nissan Formula E Team: “After finishing second yesterday, it’s even more special to take victory at home in front of the amazing Japanese fans as well as our Nissan colleagues and top management. Today we showed strong performance again in FP3 and in qualifying, having both cars advance to the duels. It’s a challenge to have two drivers up against each other in the Quarter Finals, but we’re happy that we took pole position for the third round in a row. During the race we struggled a bit with Oli in the opening stages, but he used his second Attack Mode well, fought hard, and produced a brilliant final overtake to wrap up the win. On Norman’s side, starting in the mid pack is always tricky and he suffered contact while battling for position. It’s frustrating and we’ll work hard to understand what happened in his races this weekend, as we need to have both cars scoring points to secure the teams’ title. Overall the weekend has been positive - regaining the lead of all three championships at home is a great satisfaction. To hear the Japanese national anthem while standing on the podium in Tokyo is an incredible moment for everyone in the team, and we hope we made everyone at Nissan proud.”

Oliver Rowland

“I’m thrilled to secure victory in front of our home fans here in Japan during what was a crazy race. I didn’t do a good job on the first Attack Mode and regretted being stuck further down the field, so I knew I had to take a risk when using the final six minutes. I felt like I’d been undercut so went early and it paid off as we got back into the lead and ended up securing the win! It was a very intense event and it felt so special to stand on the top step in Tokyo listening to the Japanese anthem after coming so close before. It’s a massive credit to the team as we’ve rebuilt over the last couple of years and can now consistently fight at the front. The plan is to keep this performance going at Shanghai and then after that weekend we will then start thinking about the lead we’ve got across the championships.”

Norman Nato

“The day started well with a good FP3 and then making it through to the duels in qualifying. I felt like we’d bounced back from a tough event yesterday and showed some strong pace. When battling during the race, I suffered contact which cost me several positions and then I didn’t manage to get back into the top 10. A huge congratulations to Oliver and the team for this weekend! We’ll look to get some much-deserved points for the #17 crew next time out in Shanghai.”
