The Nissan teams competed under some blisteringly hot summer conditions at round 4 of the 2021 SUPER GT series held at Twin Ring Motegi this weekend and the #3 CRAFTSPORTS MOTUL GT-R managed to come away with its third consecutive top 10 finish.
As Round 3 at Suzuka was postponed to August due to COVID-19, this round 4 race was actually the third race of the season and, with Japan having just seen the end of its rainy season, the race was held under sweltering summer conditions.
Early in the race the GT-Rs defended their starting grid positions, with Katsumasa Chiyo in the #3 GT-R holding onto 7th, Ronnie Quintarelli in the #23 GT-R retaining 10th, Daiki Sasaki in the #24 GT-R maintaining 11th, and Nobuharu Matsushita in the #12 GT-R running 15th following the opening lap. Motegi being a notoriously difficult track for overtaking, the pack quickly got locked into formation with the cars often bumper to bumper.
In the later stages of the race, the #3 GT-R had managed to move up to 6th, the #23 GT-R moved to 9th, the #12 GT-R to 11th, and the #24 GT-R, which had dropped back briefly, had recovered to 12th. The #3 GT-R then went on to pass the checkered flag and grab its third consecutive top 10 finish since the opening round, while the #23 GT-R finished 9th earning valuable points for the first time this season.
#3 driver, Katsumasa Chiyo related, "I think the setup we brought into the race worked out really well and we were able to set the top time in the practice session. It's good to score points for the third consecutive race, but I'm still very eager to get on the podium. I think Suzuka is a good track for the NISSAN GT-R NISMO GT500, so I want to aim for top positions right from qualifying and get a win.”
In the GT300 class five NISSAN GT-R NISMO GT3s competed, with the #11 GAINER TANAX GT-R (Katsuyuki Hiranaka/Hironobu Yasuda) starting from pole position and finishing in 2nd place. The other GT-Rs also competed fiercely, and all completed the race. The #11 GT-R is now sitting at 2nd place in the rankings tied in the points with the series leader, followed closely by the #56 GT-R with only a one-point gap.
The next round of the SUPER GT will be held at Suzuka Circuit on August 22nd.
